Raiders win 1st playoff game in 4 years

Varsity vs Clarkstown North HS on 2/16/2013 6:30:00 PM

It's been a long wait for the likes of Jack Hewitt, Alex Squadron, and Robert Plummer.  The three seniors have been playing on the Varsity team since their sophomore years, and have endured growing pains during their tenure.  A 3-15 season, followed by a 6-12 campaign and an outbracket exit last year, the veterans of the 2012-2013 Raiders were eager to get back on the court and taste playoff basketball.  But this year, the team wouldn't be satisfied with just qualifying for the post season, as it reached that goal before christmas break.  No, the goal was to win in a home playoff game, a chance to win a second playoff game, and then, of course, a trip to the Sectional semifinals and the county center.  The first step in that process went as hoped, as the Raiders held off a feisty Clarkstown North squad, 56-45 on Friday evening.
The score at the end of the half was 31-19 in favor of the home team, and Jon Cohen led the way with 19 of his game high 21 points, including 4 3s, in the first 16 minutes.  While the Rams cut the lead to 6 midway through the 3rd session, that was the closest they would get. SHS extended the lead to 18 in the 4th quarter, with contributions from everyone on the squad.  Jack Hewitt added 11 points and 5 blocks, while teammate Alex Squadron once again played tremendous defense on the Rams' leading scorer Zach Jarrett, holding the 15ppg player to single digits.
As a result of the win, the 7th seeded , now 13-6 Raiders, travel across the TZ bridge on Wednesday to face the 2nd seeded 17-2 North Rockland Red Raiders.  TIp off is set for 5:30PM.  A win would send SHS to its first County Center appearance in 4 years.
